Garuda Panchami: Garuda is said to have brought the pot of ambrosia from heaven to liberate his mother Vinata from slavery to his step mother Kadruva. Kadruva had cheated Vinata earlier in a bet and forced her into slavery on condition that she would be released only when her children would be offered ambrosia. But Garuda knew that giving the nectar of immortality to his cousins & enemies, the Nagas or snakes would prove disastrous to the world. So, he brought the pot of ambrosia and kept it on Durva grass and before the snakes could reach the pot, he flew away with it back to heaven, thus liberating his mother and also protecting dharma! Chant 'Om Shree Garudadhwajaya Namaha' today 108 times. Garduadhwaja is the name of Lord Vishnu whose flag & vahana is Garuda. Chanting this name is said to cure people of infectious diseases and poisons. Garuda cures Rama and Lakshmana from the poisonous arrows shot by Indrajit in the Ramayana.
